But it's just pretty much universally accepted now that GPS in general is only accurate to a point.Ĭan't speak much for Runtastic specifically, but I am the creator of a running app as a passion project. It's not even about varying devices (although yes, they do vary). That's not too bad, although three minutes when you're going for a PR or a BQ time can be a pretty big deal. Last year when I ran a marathon, I hit 26.2, but had to run about three more minutes to finish, so it was off by a couple tenths of a mile or so over the distance.

    Now that I think about it and look at that study, it has more to do with the device (iPhone, Galaxy, etc.) than the app. Here is a good accuracy study of many running devices that some guy did. GPS is only accurate down to about 20 feet on these fitness devices.
